Step-by-Step Guide to Filing an RTI Online

Step 1: Visit the Official RTI Portal

Go to the Government of India’s official RTI portal: https://rtionline.gov.in.

Step 2: Click on ‘Submit Request’

• On the homepage, click on the ‘Submit Request’ option.
• Read the guidelines carefully and check the box confirming you have read them.
• Click on ‘Submit’ to proceed.

Step 3: Select the Public Authority

• Choose the appropriate Ministry/Department from the dropdown menu where your query is relevant.
• Ensure you are directing the RTI application to the correct authority to avoid rejection.

Step 4: Fill in Your Personal Details

• Enter your name, address, phone number, and email ID as required.
• If applicable, mention if you are below the poverty line (BPL) and upload supporting documents.

Step 5: Draft Your RTI Query

• In the ‘Text for RTI Request’ field, clearly and concisely write your query.
• Be specific about the information you seek to improve the chances of a proper response.
• The character limit is 3,000 characters; if your query is longer, attach a document.

Step 6: Pay the RTI Fee

• The application fee is ₹10 (waived for BPL applicants).
• Payment can be made via debit/credit card, internet banking, or UPI.
• After payment, you will receive a unique registration number for tracking.

Step 7: Submit the RTI Request

• Review your application and click on ‘Submit’.
• You will receive an acknowledgment email/SMS with the registration number.

Step 8: Track Your RTI Application

• To check the status, go to the ‘View Status’ section on https://rtionline.gov.in.
• Enter your registration number, email ID, and security code to track progress.

Step 9: Receive the Response

• The public authority is required to respond within 30 days (48 hours for life and liberty matters).
• The response will be available on the portal and may also be emailed to you.

Additional Tips:

✔️ Do not ask for opinions, reasoning, or future actions—stick to factual information.
✔️ If dissatisfied with the response, you can file a First Appeal on the portal.
